Asenapine is an anti-psychotic drug that is prescribed for patients with schizophrenia or severe bipolar disorder. This drug can help eliminate delusions and hallucinations associated with psychotic illness. For this reason, it’s also used to help elderly people who suffer from psychotic dementia.
Elderly people who take this medication are at greater risk for heart attacks and strokes than people who do not take the medication. This medication can also cause pneumonia and other fatal infections among elderly people. For this reason, the drug is not approved for use in treating elderly people with dementia, although it is often prescribed for this purpose.
