Cidofovir is used to treat serious infections that don’t respond to other antibiotics. It is often used to treat CMV retinitis in AIDS patients. This infection causes inflammation in the retina of the eye and causes vision difficulties.
This medication can be highly toxic to the kidneys. Some patients experience irreversible kidney damage within one or two doses of Cidofovir. Patients who already have kidney problems should not take this medication.
Laboratory tests on animals have shown that Cidofovir causes problems with sperm production as well as serious birth defects. Patients who can get pregnant or who have partners who can get pregnant shouldn’t take this medication.
