Flucytosine
Flucytosine is an antifungal medication used to treat fungus infections in the blood, lungs, heart, central nervous system or urinary tract. This medication comes in capsule form; it must be taken with a full glass of water. Patients should continue to take this medication after they feel better in order to avoid a return of the infection.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication can cause nausea and vomiting. To reduce these side effects, patients may take the capsules over a 15 minute period rather than taking their entire prescribed dose at once.
This medication can cause kidney problems, so patients with kidney disease should not take it. Patients should have regular tests for kidney and liver problems while on this medication. They should also contact their doctors immediately if they have symptoms of kidney or liver disease such as:
- Severe pain in the abdomen or lower back
- Difficulty or pain while urinating
- Brown urine or tarry, black stools
- Jaundice
