Liothyronine Sodium is a hormone that is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where a person’s thyroid gland doesn’t make as much thyroid hormone as the person needs. This medication is taken orally every morning before the patient has breakfast. Most patients need to stay on this drug for the rest of their lives after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
This medication is only appropriate for patients who have a diagnosed thyroid condition. It should not be used to promote weight loss or for other off-label uses. Taking thyroid medication when you have normal thyroid functioning can cause hyperthyroidism. If combined with weight loss pills or other amphetamines, taking unnecessary amounts of thyroid can be fatal.
