Metronidazole (Oral and injection)
Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is effective against parasites and anaerobic bacteria. It is often used to treat infections in the stomach, ovaries and vagina. This medication kills bacteria by interfering with their ability to function so that they cannot continue to survive.
Side Effects/Warnings
This medication should only be used to treat serious bacterial infections that do not respond to other medication. Care should be taken not to prescribe this medication in response to aerobic bacteria, as it is only effective against anaerobic bacteria. Using this medication unnecessarily may cause bacteria to become resistant to its effects. In addition, this medication has been shown to cause cancer in lab rats, so it should not be used unnecessarily in humans in order to lower the risk of developing cancer.
