This medication blocks nerve impulses that signal pain to the brain so that patients don’t feel chronic or severe pain. This medication is sometimes given to patients who have become tolerant of other narcotic medications.
This medication contains a narcotic drug and is potentially addictive. Patients who have a history of addiction, especially addiction to and abuse of narcotic drugs, should avoid this medication if at all possible. Patients also should use the drug only as prescribed and should not raise their dose or take the drug more often than their doctor directs.
