Salsalate is a non-steroid antinflammatory drug, or NSAID. NSAIDs are often used to manage pain related to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or other conditions that cause swelling and inflammation of the joints. This medication helps reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of a body substance that causes inflammation, pain and fever.
Patients who have a history of heart disease, especially those who have had a heart attack or stroke, should not take this medication. Taking Salsalate increases the risk that you will have a fatal heart attack or stroke. Fatal heart problems can occur without warning in patients who take this medication. It’s especially important to avoid taking Salsalate if you have recently had or are soon scheduled to have coronary bypass surgery.
