Vismodegib is a chemotherapy drug that is given to patients who have basal cell carcinoma in addition to cancer that has spread throughout their bodies. This medication can also be used to treat basal cell carcinoma that doesn’t respond to radiation or other therapy even if the patient doesn’t have other types of cancer. This medication blocks a protein from signaling cancer cells to multiply.
This medication increases the risk of miscarriage or significant birth defects. You should not conceive or contribute to conception for seven months after you stop this medication in order to minimize the risk to your unborn child.
