Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a drug that is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutica, approved by the FDA in 2011 for the reduction of the risk of stroke and blood clots in people in connection with certain conditions and surgical procedures.
While Xarelto is an effective blood thinner, it can also cause serious uncontrolled bleeding. In fact, after almost three years on the market, the FDA issued a black box warning regarding Xarelto in March 2014. Individuals with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) are at an increased risk of forming a blood clot in the heart, which can travel to the brain, causing a stroke, or to other parts of the body.
The FDA also warned that epidural or spinal hematomas have occurred in patients treated with Xarelto who are receiving neuraxial anesthesia or undergoing spinal puncture and that those hematomas may result in long-term or permanent paralysis.
The Real Risks Associated With Xarelto
The most serious side effect of taking Xarelto is that it can cause serious uncontrolled bleeding, which can be fatal.
Another serious side effect of Xarelto is that it may cause a blood clot around the spinal cord. This type of blood clot can lead to long-term or permanent paralysis.
Patients using Xarelto may have a higher risk of developing a spinal cord clot if: (1) they undergo a spinal tap or receive spinal anesthesia (epidural); (2) have had a spinal catheter in place; (3) have a history of spinal surgery or repeated spinal taps; or (4) or are currently using other drugs that can affect blood clotting. These risks can increase if the patient has a genetic spinal defect.
It is important to bear in mind that some of your other medicines may increase your risk of bleeding when taken with Xarelto, including:
- Aspirin or aspirin containing products
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Warfarin sodium (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)
- Any medicine that contains heparin
- Clopidogrel (Plavix®)
- Other medicines to prevent or treat blood clots
There are presently a number of actions pending against Jannsen Pharmaceutical by individuals who have experienced severe bleeding problems while using Xarelto. Current lawsuits are focused on Jannsen’s failure to adequately warn about the risks associated with Xarelto.
Xarelto plaintiffs can potential recover damages pain and suffering, hospital and medical costs, lost wages, emotional distress and other related damages.
